Full Class Description:

"Rose Painting Masterclass" is a dynamic seven-week workshop designed to empower you with the essential skills and techniques required to create stunning rose-themed paintings. This immersive course delves deep into the art of painting roses, from designing the composition to painting the final details.

In week one, you will explore the foundations of composition by designing a unique composition for a beautiful floral still life. Explore techniques for refining your design using digital painting techniques, simple photo collages, and inspiration from historical master painters.

In week two, we will explore color theory principles, experiment with different hues and values, and develop strategies for using color effectively to evoke mood and atmosphere in our artwork.

In week three, we will focus on drawing and sketching roses to better understand their structure and forms. Drawing is a critical component of painting. Improving your drawing skills will improve your paintings, too!

For the last four weeks of the class, students will have the opportunity to apply their newfound skills and knowledge to create a final painting that showcases their mastery of rose painting techniques. Guided by expert feedback and personalized instruction, participants will bring their artistic vision to fruition, producing an original piece that reflects their unique style and creativity.

Question: Is this workshop live or prerecorded?

Answer: This workshop will be held live online! If you can't join us live, recordings will be available.

Question: When does the workshop take place?

Answer: The workshop is seven weeks long. The dates are: Saturdays, September 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, and October 5th, 12th, and 19th from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Pacific Time (with a 15-minute break.) Optional critique sessions will be held on Fridays, September 13th, 20th, 27th, and October 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm Pacific Time.

Question: Will the workshop include critiques and feedback for students?

Answer: Yes! Optional critique sessions will be held on Fridays, September 13th, 20th, 27th, and October 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm Pacific Time. All Critique sessions will be recorded so students can review them later. All work submitted will be critiqued, even if the student cannot attend the critique live.

Question: I won't be able to attend all workshop sessions or critique sessions. Will I miss out?

Answer: Not at all! All workshop and critique sessions will be recorded so you can always view them later if you can't attend live.

Question: What mediums will be used in this workshop?

Answer: This course is focused on painting in oils. Week 3 will also focus on drawing with graphite and/or charcoal.

Question: Can I paint with other mediums besides oil?

Answer: I welcome students to experiment with other mediums, however, I am primarily an oil painter and will focus all of my instruction and demonstrations on oil painting.

Question: Will you provide photo reference for students?

Answer: No. The intention of this workshop is for students to develop their own, original artwork. Original artwork requires original photo reference. Therefore, you must photograph your own reference images as part of this workshop.

Question: Is there a supply list?

Answer: Yes! There is a downloadable PDF of recommended materials and supplies available in the "Introduction" section of the course.

Question: Do I need to purchase everything on the supply list?

Answer: No! If you already have drawing and oil painting supplies, then please feel free to use those.

Question: Will students be expected to paint during the workshop sessions?

Answer: It's up to you! I encourage you to paint along with me during demonstrations. Of course, if you prefer to just watch, that's fine, too.

Question: Can students ask questions during the workshop?

Answer: Yes! I encourage questions. For the sake of the workshop recording, I request that all questions be typed into the chat. I will answer questions live during the workshop.

Question: Are assignments included in this workshop?

Answer: Yes, there are recommended assignments provided for each week of the workshop.

Question: How many paintings will we work on in this course?

Answer: This workshop intends to focus on just one painting for the entire seven weeks of the course. In addition to that, we will work on developing drawings, value thumbnails, and color studies to refine the composition and concept of the painting.

Question: Can I work on more than one painting during this workshop?

Answer: Yes. I will focus my instruction and demonstration on one painting process, but if you want to work on more than one painting during the seven weeks of the workshop, then that is also fine.

Question: Do paintings generally take seven weeks to finish?

Answer: Sometimes! Often, I will spend much longer than seven weeks working on a painting. Everyone's pace is a little different.

Question: Do I have to paint from life?

Answer: It won't be possible to paint entirely from life when working with fresh flowers for seven weeks. Instead, we will combine life studies, color studies, drawings, and photo references to complete our paintings.
