Full Class Description:

Rose Painting Masterclass is a six-week workshop designed to guide you through a thoughtful and repeatable creative process for oil painting. Our goal is to explore the rose as a subject of careful observation as well as a vehicle for artistic expression. Throughout the course, we will balance intuitive exploration with logical structure, developing a process that allows you to make purposeful artistic decisions while leaving room for discovery.

Week One: Color
We will begin with an in-depth exploration of color and its practical application to painting. Through exercises with different hues and color mixtures, we will develop strategies for organizing and manipulating color to create atmosphere and visual harmony.

Week Two: Composition
We will explore the foundations of composition and develop a unique design for a floral still life. Using digital painting, simple photo collages, and inspiration from historical master painters, we will experiment with different possibilities and learn how to refine an idea before committing it to the final painting.

Weeks Three–Six: The Final Painting
For the final four weeks, we will use our preparatory work to develop a finished rose painting. We will begin by exploring different approaches to starting a painting and considering how these initial decisions influence the character of the finished work. As the painting develops, we will focus on establishing form and color relationships, refining detail, and using brushwork and paint texture intentionally to bring the work to completion.

The class will conclude with an optional final critique session where students can share their work, reflect on their experience, and receive feedback and guidance for continuing their artistic development.

Join us for six weeks of observation, experimentation, and focused painting as we explore the rose not simply as a subject to copy, but as an opportunity to develop your own artistic ideas and a creative process you can return to again and again.

Question: Is this workshop live?

Answer: Yes, this workshop will be held live on Zoom.

Question: How long is the workshop?

Answer: The workshop is six sessions long. Each session is about 3 hours long.

Question: What mediums will be used in this workshop?

Answer: This course is focused on painting in oils. Students may use other mediums, but all demonstrations and instruction will concentrate on oil painting.

Question: Can I paint with other mediums besides oil?

Answer: I welcome students to experiment with other mediums; however, I am primarily an oil painter and will focus all of my instruction and demonstrations on oil painting.

Question: Will you provide photo reference for students?

Answer: No. The intention of this workshop is for students to develop their own, original artwork. Original artwork requires original photo reference. Therefore, you must photograph your own reference images as part of this workshop.

Question: Is there a supply list?

Answer: Yes! There is a downloadable PDF of recommended materials and supplies available in the "Introduction" section of the course.

Question: Do I need to purchase everything on the supply list?

Answer: No! If you already have drawing and oil painting supplies, then please feel free to use those.

Question: Are assignments included in this workshop?

Answer: Yes, there are recommended assignments provided for each week of the workshop. You can preview and download the class schedule and assignments before signing up for the workshop.

Question: How many paintings will we work on in this course?

Answer: This workshop intends to focus on just one painting for the entire six weeks of the course. In addition to that, we will work on developing color studies and value thumbnails to refine the composition and concept of the painting.

Question: Can I work on more than one painting during this workshop?

Answer: Yes. I will focus my instruction and demonstration on one painting process, but if you want to work on more than one painting during the seven weeks of the workshop, then that is also fine.

Question: Do paintings generally take six weeks to finish?

Answer: Sometimes! Everyone's pace is a little different. This class is intentionally drawn out to help students focus on planning and reflecting on their painting process in order to produce a stronger result.

Question: Do I have to paint from life?

Answer: It won't be possible to paint entirely from life when working with fresh flowers for six weeks. Instead, we will combine life studies, color studies, drawings, and photo references to complete our paintings.
